“I Am Account” is not a film that sticks closely to it’s source material. While that is it’s biggest flaw, it is also where it shines. If you ha told me two years ago that I’d gather misty-eyed watching Will Smith squawk “Three Puny Birds” in a stout budget motion characterize I’d have laughed myself funny, but this adaptation of Richard Mathson’s untouchable new that -while itself being a vampire story- inspired the entire zombie film genre as we know it takes the chronicle we all know whether we’ve read the book or not and turns it into an exceptionally personal affair for all of us. One man. One dog. A familiar metropolis deserted by day, but crawling with death by nightfall. This is our setting and it’s one that never gets obsolete for me.

The plague that wipes out Robert Neville’s world is never fully explained, simply inferred to be the result of some sort of failed cure for cancer. Gone from the original and the new Vincent Notice classic, The Last Man on Earth, is the long struggle of Neville to establish his ill daughter, his wife’s tranformation, and the monstrous actions of the US government to gain the plague. What it left is simply one man, alone trying to enjoy his sanity and hopelessly searching for a cure to a disease that has already wiped humanity off the face of the earth and left the “survivors” as rabid vampiric horrors. It’s unlit, it’s pathetic, and it’s perfectly human. Will Smith has a penchant for picking bad, schmaltzy films to star in, but no one can utter his talent and charisma as a leading man. Naturally, this is a film he must carry single-handedly and he does an awesome job of it; he’s dramatic, he’s relateable, and at times, he is silly. The humor is that of the sunless and injurious kind, but in a world like his, that is all there is left.

The vampires/zombies/infected in this are all CG and more than a bit reminiscent of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings. I’m not a fan of these kind of effects when practical would have been more effective and was acutely aware of the fact that I watching computer-generated monsters, but they worked nonetheless. The infected show to be monstrous foes for Neville to face, combining suprising cunning, inhuman strength, and impossible agility (hence the CG) . Their only weakness is that sunlight kills them almost instantly. Neville plays a game of cat-and-mouse with them, gathering supplies, researching cure, and searching for survivors by day while making clear to secure aid to his fortified apartment before nightfall when the creatures near out to hunt for his hiding status. More than a few shades of 28 Days Later are explain in this film, which is humorous considering the book and it’s film offspring are largely what provided the elements of that film. So I guess the genre has officially arrive paunchy circle now.

Ultimately, it’s the personal touches that acquire “I Am Chronicle” such a treat. Bob Marley provides both the soundtrack to Robert Neville’s day and the inspiration for his work, which is both ironic and uplifting at times. This may sound unique for a dismay flick, but if you are a fan of Marley (himself a Record) it makes all the sense in the world as you observe. Watching Neville attempt to interact with mannequins he’s place up as he returns the movies he rents (in alphabetical order, one at a time) and seeing him snap when one of the figures is moved is both droll and, at times, intensely disturbing. When relief finally comes, Neville finds he has lost the ability to interact with other humans at all and is relegated to performing lines from “Shrek”, which is playing on his television at the time. The ending is a complete 180 from the book which is disappointing, but not as corny as it could have been. The new I Am Epic has one of the most shiny and darkly ironic endings ever assign on paper, but director Francis Lawrence didn’t extinguish it by go for the ecstatic ending either. The result is a compromise between the pitch blackness of the book and the cloying cheese that many Will Smith fans care for. It turns out a bittersweet and hopeful conclsion that should satisfy both while not thrilling either. But I left the theater with “Redemption Song” composed ringing in my ears and a ecstatic feeling. If only every movie could do that for me.

“I Am Account” fails to adapt the book of the same name to the vast cloak, but succeeds in so many other ways. I can’t give it a perfect bag, but I will give it a very hearty recommendation to fans of Will Smith, zombies, vampires, and Bob Marley. Devour.

I Am Narrative can’t gain a attractive shake. This Will Smith-led production is the third attempt Hollywood has made to adapt the intelligent recent. None of the adaptions have truly done the modern justice (which is a shame), but this version has near the closest.

Here we have a intelligent beginning; footage of a scientist (played beautifully by Emma Thompson) saying humbly that she’s discovered a intention to cure cancer. Quick forward a few years, and Original York is utterly devoid of human life, keep for Robert Neville (Will Smith) . As the first half of the film progresses, we learn about his meager living, spending the day harvesting and trying to examine a cure, even now, while spending the night huddled in his protected home as creatures prowl.

His only companion, a amazing dog named Sam, protects Neville as Neville protects him. They have a friendship based on loneliness and the human need for someone or something to bear onto. Sam is Neville’s only connection to the past and the only arrangement to relate what slight humanity is left, either in the world or Neville himself. This period in the movie is pitch perfect, puncuated by one or two repugnant sequences that instill valid anxiety.

Unfortunately, the last half of the film deteriorates into an action movie that completely changes the meaning of the words “I Am Tale.” Don’t procure me snide, it’s mostly done really well. Constantine director Francis Lawrence has a great handle on the action and delivers some beneficial scenes. But, it becomes muddled and veers off completely from the unusual. My biggest complaint, though, is the utilize of CGI. Instead of using precise flesh and blood actors, all of the creatures are created with CG and they gape incredibly false when lined up next to sincere people. In the beginning, it’s not a plight but as you recognize more of them (and you will) it’s glaringly positive. And annoying.

All of this I was expecting going in, though. Considering that the film was co-written by Akiva Goldsman who also wrote I, Robot, I knew this version would stray from the source material fair as I, Robot did. As a movie, it’s genuinely thrilling and creates the perfect balance of tension and action through most of its entirety. And, surprisingly, Will Smith shows that he’s a really obedient actor as he has to not only tackle many conflicting emotions during the two hour rush time but he also has to do so without having mighty of anyone to react to. Spending a advantageous hour or so without another single actor for Will Smith to work with was a gamble and it paid off.

Your enjoyment of the film is entirely based on what you bring to the table. If you’re coming to this film expecting to scrutinize the book reach to life you’ll be sorely disappointed. However, if you’re looking for a ample action movie that actually has a salubrious epic and a human aspect, you’ll be hard-pressed to secure one as thrilling recently.

A funny show where a quirky detective is alternately helped and hindered by his obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and several phobias. The premiere was two hours long and episodes were 60 minutes long. I’m impressed that this is widescreen and DTS! Four discs and running time of 563 minutes doesn’t leave much room for the extras, but I haven’t been able to find much detail about the extras or their length.

Premiere: 1 & 2. Mr. Monk and the Candidate: Monk works as a private investigator after losing his job on the police department due to his psychiatric problems. Three years later, he gets a call from his old boss who needs his help to solve a murder.

3. Mr. Monk and the Psychic: Monk and a psychic stage a psychic reading to catch a murderer.

4. Mr. Monk Meets Dale the Whale gs: Adam Arkin: Monk tries to prove how a bedridden 800 pound man could have murdered a judge.

5. Mr. Monk Goes to the Carnival: Monk tries to discover who murdered a man riding on a ferris wheel.

6. Mr. Monk Goes to the Asylum: While incarcerated in a psychiatric facility, Monk learns of an unsolved murder.

7. Mr. Monk and the Billionaire Mugger: A billionaire is shot dead while supposedly mugging a couple outside a movie theater.

8. Mr. Monk and the Other Woman: While investigating the murder of a lawyer and his assistant, Monk is attracted to another woman who understands him.

9. Mr. Monk and the Marathon Man: Monk tries to find out who killed a woman during the San Francisco marathon.

10. Mr. Monk Takes a Vacation: Monk goes on vacation to the beach with Benjy and Sharona. The vacation ends when Benjy witnesses a murder.

11. Mr. Monk and the Earthquake: A man dies during an earthquake and Monk tries to prove that he was murdered.

12. Mr. Monk and the Red-Headed Stranger gs Willie Nelson: Willie Nelson (playing himself) is suspected of killing his manager.

13. Mr. Monk and the Airplane gs Tim Daly: Monk’s concerns about flying doesn’t keep him from investigating what he thinks might be a murder. The flight attendant is played by Monk’s wife in real life, Brooke Adams.

I blew it. I didn’t start watching this show until it’s second season. Little did I know what I was missing.

Tony Shalhoub stars as Adrian Monk, a former police detective no longer on the force because of his obsessive-compulsive disorder and his phobias. He does still consult on some of their most bizarre cases, however. For example, how could an 800-lb. man commit murder? Why was a billionaire killed while mugging a man on a date? Did a fellow airline passenger really kill his wife? How could a man commit murder and run a marathon at the same time?

This series falls into the classic puzzle mystery genre, my personal favorite. Sometimes I have an idea why or how, but it takes the ending for me to know for sure. More often then not, I’m stumped. Along the way, we get plenty of laughs at the various situations we find Mr. Monk in. The obsessive-compulsive disorder and his fears are handled just right. They provide the clues needed and humor without being over the top or annoying.

Of course, the series is helped by its actors. Tony Shalhoub is excellent as Monk with a performance just slightly understated. He deserved his Emmy win for this season. Just as praise worthy is Bitty Schram as Monk’s nurse Sharona. She mixes exasperated and compassionate while providing a strong sidekick character that doesn’t get lost behind the lead. Ted Levine and Jason Gray-Stanford as the police Monk helps and Stanley Kamel as Monk’s shrink are equally excellent.

The writing is sharp and manages to find humor without mocking Monk, a subtle but clear distinction.

This DVD set is great for old and new fans alike. All twelve first season episodes are present, including the previously released two-hour pilot. They’re presented in widescreen and look sharp. The sound, while presented in 5.1 surround, is nothing spectacular. Still, it gets the job done. Disc four has some short extras discussing the creation of the show, obsessive-compulsive disorder, the cast and crew’s obsessions, the Emmy win, and the casting of Bitty Schram and Ted Levine. I would have loved a commentary track or two and some outtakes, but they aren’t to be found here.

While the extras could have been just a tad better, this set is a must have for those who love light mystery. It was nice to catch the cases I’d missed. This is one mystery show you can watch time and time again for the humor and character even if you remember how it ends.

At a high school graduation party, overweight Chris Brander (Ryan Reynolds) attempts to reveal his true feelings for his best friend Jamie Palomino (Amy Smart), but ends up making an utter fool of himself. What’s worse, his humiliation takes place in front of his jeering teenage peers. A decade later, Chris has become a success story. He is now thin, prosperous, is a hit with girls, and works as an executive in the music industry. His latest assignment is escorting wacky starlet/pop princess and ex-flame Samantha James (Anna Faris) to Paris, France. But their plane has to make an unscheduled landing in Jersey, Chris’s high school home. Rationally, Chris and Samantha decide to stay at his old house. Chris has a reunion with his former buddies, including the winsome Jamie, who immediately rekindles that old spark within Chris. The remainder of the film concerns Chris’s efforts to make Jamie see him as more than a friend, while simultaneously fending off the warped Samantha. Competition comes in the form of a former fellow nerd turned sensitive guy Dusty Dinkleman (Chris Klein).

Just Friends is a very funny, feel-good movie. Ryan Reynolds is a hoot as a brash L.A. stud who disastrously channels his inner dweeb whenever he’s around unrequited love Jamie. Ryan is really excellent with physical comedy. There are scenes with him that are just uproarious (case in point, the aftermath of his politically incorrect hockey game with the kids). I even enjoyed his frequent Three Stooges encounters with his kid brother (Chris Marquette). And when he has to, Ryan steps outside the slapstick and layers in a deeper nuanced, more introspective performance. I ended up rooting for Chris, even though he was overly cocky and big-timed his home town folks. And then there’s Amy Smart, who seemingly can do no wrong. There’s just something so lovable and natural about her. She embodies the type of girl every guy would want to be with. Anna Faris’s turn as the unstable Samantha adds to the already boisterous feel of the film. Samantha actually scares me. Chris Klein’s Dusty, Chris’s guitar-playing, song-writing rival, is disgustingly touchy-feely. One would wish that a different sort of arc for Dusty’s character had been laid out; the script writer, in my eyes, sold out and made things too convenient for Chris, with regards to Dusty. Julie Hagerty (Airplane!) has a goofy supporting role as Chris’s mom.

The special features are tasty:

Buy,Download, Or Stream Just Friends! Click Here

– a filmmakers’ film commentary

– “Tales from the Friend Zone” featurette (the cast & crew talk about real life “just friends” experiences)

– “Developing Just Friends” featurette (wherein we learn of the script’s 7 year odyssey and how, originally, Chris didn’t get the girl at the end)

– “A Director’s Guide to Comedy” featurette

– “The Transformation” featurette (about Ryan’s fat face make-up)

– “The Body Shake” featurette (the awkwardness of when you’re dropping off a date; do you hug or kiss?)

– “It’s Friggin’ Cold” featurette (the cast & crew basically complaining about how cold the shooting was)

– “A Writer’s Journey” featurette (focus on script writer Adam “Tex” Davis)

– “A Disaster in the Making” featurette (about the making of the Palomino house X-mas decor and its eventual fate)

– “The Reshoots” featurette (the making of the eventual ending of the film, which wasn’t the original ending)

– a so-so blooper reel

– deleted scenes

– an alternate ending (this was the initially intended ending; you could see why they changed it)

– an amusing “Jamie Smiles” video

– theatrical trailer

So, try out this movie. It’ll make you smile and laugh and even feel nostalgic because, let’s face it: just like me, you’ve been in Chris’s position before, too.

This movie definitely turned out to be better than expected. I’d just seen “Waiting”, which was decent, so I was interested to see what this Ryan Reynolds film would have to offer.

This movie had a much better storyline than did “Waiting…” It was very refreshing to see Ryan Reynolds play a character that wasn’t Van Wilder-esque. He gives a very funny performance as the fat-kid turned Hollywood man-about-town who returns home and reconnects with the girl who broke his heart in his youth.

The movie is funny right off the starting line and remains funny throughout.

Recommended.

Cambodian friend and colleague Dith Pran behind when the Khmur Rogue
took over the country in 1975. Dith Pran is forced into a worker’s
camp, where he endures unspeakable agonies until he finally
escapes.

The movie won three well-deserved academy awards. One was
best for cinematography. I can understand why. Even though the movie
was shot in Thailand, the feeling of Indo-China and the area along the
Mekong display its great beauty as well as the countryside. Jon Swain
describes this in his book, but there is nothing like seeing it on the
screen. And then there are the killing fields themselves, with bones
and rotting corpses that Dith Pran discovers. Anyone who has ever
seen this film will never forget this scene.

The second award was
for film editing. That was a job of real artistry. It is always a
choice of what tiny segments of a scene to emphasize and the editors
got it exactly right. There was the terrified child holding her hands
over her ears to shut out the bombing sounds. There was the tiny
vegetable that Dith Pran plucks off a plant with relish when he is in
the prison camp. There is the wash of blood on the floor in the
hospital where people were dying.

Dr. Hang S. Ngor won an Oscar for
his role of Dith Pran, one of the few non-professional actors to ever
win an Oscar. He was especially suited to the part because he,
himself, had endured 4 years of torture and imprisonment in a
Cambodian work camp. He had to hide his identity of physician and
watch his young wife die in childbirth while there. No wonder he was
able to play the part so well. I understand he was murdered in his
garage in his home in Los Angeles in 1996 during a robbery in which he
tried to protect a memento from his wife.

The entire cast was
wonderful, each acting performance outstanding. Sam Waterson played
Sydney Schanberg with passion and realism. John Malkovich played his
photographer sidekick. And Julian Sands had a small role as
journalist Jon Swain who was one of the three westerners saved from
execution by the intervention of Dith Pran and whose tried
unsuccessfully to forge a passport to help Dith Pran escape.

Even
though the movie was 141 minutes long, I was totally absorbed with the
same kind of horrific fascination I felt while reading Jon Swain’s
book. It’s hard to believe that such horrors go on in the world while
we sit here in our comfortable lives. This movie shocks us into
reality. And makes us appreciate our blessings. It also reminded me
of the role of the journalist to go out on the front lines and risk
their lives for their stories. They are to be applauded as being the
witnesses to their times.

Highly recommended. But don’t expect a
good night’s sleep afterwards.

This movie could be considered an “Epic”. It is very good, especially the last couple minutes when Pran finally reaches safety & then is visited by his old journalist friend.

I took one star off because apparently the DVD version is not as long as the original. The original version showed a scene where the Vietnamese Army liberated the Khmer Rouge village right before Dith Pran makes his escape. This scene was missing & also some of the other scenes seemed shorter than they originally were. I would estimate that about 15 to 20 min. of film was chopped out of this version. I hate it when film studios do this. It’s sacrilege!!!

Hopefully a Directors Cut is released so I can again see the film in it’s full form.

There are no world domination conspiracies. No extravagant super-gadgets. No deadly supermodels and megalomaniac geniuses. Just Bourne, his wits, a couple of guns, and whatever else he can get his hands on.

Firmly entrenched in reality (as much as having a martial arts expert with photographic memory, incredible marksmanship and driving skills, coupled with fluency in at least four languages, and spycraft/black ops training is feasible in the real world), The Bourne Supremacy follows in the footsteps of The Bourne Identity to deliver solid action which is a refreshing break from the cartoon shenanigans of Bond.

The film opens two years after the events of The Bourne Identity, where Jason Bourne, a black ops assassin played by Matt Damon, had become amnesiac and severed his ties with the CIA. Jason and his lover, Maria, played once again by the German actress Franka Potente, have been skipping around the globe and are currently hiding in India. However, events beyond his control conspire to drag him back to the conspiracies and machinations of hidden players. An undercover CIA agent is murdered in Berlin, and all the evidence points to Bourne. Brian Cox, Julia Stiles, and some minor players return from the first movie, and Joan Allen is introduced as a high level CIA administrator who wants to track Bourne down. There are plenty of twists and turns along the way, lots of globetrotting, including visits to Paris, Berlin, and Moscow, and great set pieces.

The return of most of the cast from the first movie serves as a great means of establishing continuity. Strangely enough, Ms. Stiles is once again delegated to a very minor role (in the first movie, she was little more than a glorified phone operator), but this time around, she has a key scene with Mr. Damon. Ms. Allen has great presence and manages to hold her own in her many scenes with Mr. Cox. Mr. Damon thoroughly inhabits the role of Bourne, convincingly playing a ruthless assassin who, despite intense conditioning to be a remorseless killer, is struggling to regain his humanity. Mr. Damon has once again spent considerable time conditioning himself for the role, and it shows. He is lean, fit, and utterly believable in his fighting sequences. However, more than being just another action hero, Mr. Damon also brings convincing intelligence to the role. The audience can believe that Bourne is constantly thinking two steps ahead of everyone else, that anything can become a weapon in his hands, that he is always considering a way out, and that every act, even simply picking up a bottle of vodka, has a reason.

The image quality of the DVD is excellent, although in parts it seemed too dark. The filming technique used by the director, which involves extensive use of hand-held and shoulder-mounted cameras, has been much criticized, and must have been a dizzying experience in the movie theater, but in the confines of a big screen TV, it serves to bring the viewer right into the action. Granted, some of the quick editing and shaky camera work make a few of the fight scenes claustrophobic and confusing, but that seems to be the desired effect. There are a handful of deleted scenes (which are of much lower video quality and don’t really add much to the plot; they are also all strung together – one cannot select individual deleted scenes), director’s comment track, and some other production segments. I have not heard the director’s commentary or examined the other documentaries, yet. One nitpick of the DVD is Universal’s decision to add unskippable advertising at the beginning. One cannot press menu to escape; one is forced to fast forward through the useless ads.

Highly recommended.

Wow! Talk about a taut, mind-numbing set of sequences full of energy, moment and action, this sequel to the original -The Bourne Identity- is that most elusive of entities, a much better, tighter, and suspenseful movie than its original. This sharply spun tale allows Matt Damon to reprise his role as Jason Bourne, the recovering amnesiac CIA spy gone AWOL, this time running for his life through a catalogue of cities from Goa, India to Berlin, and from Berlin to Moscow. And with an action coda that brings to mind the breathless pace of such action classics as Steve McQueen?s -Bullitt-, it is so quick, deft, and terrific one can literally get lost in the activity.

Damon is superb as Bourne, an angry, amnesiac, and absolutely murderous foe for anyone who crosses his path with deadly intent, which seems to happen with stunning regularity in this film. Given the current popular disgust and disdain for the CIA, the movie hits home by portraying its hierarchy as thugs in business suits, bent on silencing Bourne regardless of his innocence or guilt. Damon is losing some of his boy-next-door qualities, but burns up the screen with an Eastwood like set of facial expressions that underplay the emotions and make the dialogue often sparse and terse. His physical presence more than makes up for the verbal void, however. His moves are nothing short of spellbinding.

Luckily, the plot avoids the current morbid Hollywood preoccupation with terrorists, middle Eastern personalities, or religious overtones, and rather chooses to concentrate on more traditional East European skullduggery with undertones of big money and dirty oil deals in setting the stage for murder, mayhem, and some of the most outrageously memorable car chase scenes this side of -The French Connection-. This is an exciting movie franchise that one can rest easy about, knowing it will certainly be fleshed out entertainingly over the years by Damon and company. With superbly and smartly produced thrillers like this, why not spin the yarn as far as it will go? Enjoy!

This nature documentary is a 90-minute mini-version of the much longer Planet Earth produced by the BBC. The latter production took five years to make, had a $25 million budget, and employed the latest in photographic technology. The super slow motion and time lapse techniques are especially impressive. Watching the twelve-month transformation of a forest in 30 seconds is spectacular. Earth focuses on three animal “families”–a polar bear and two cubs, a herd of elephants, and then a mother and baby humpback whale that make a 4,000 mile migration. In between these three stories the film intersperses takes from the longer documentary. My only complaint is that this production oversells the product with music that at times is both melodramatic and cutesy, and a corny narration that is clearly intended for young children (”Time for mom and dad to fix breakfast for junior!”). If there is any nature photography that does not need hype, this big screen version is it. Still, like its longer predecessor, Earth makes for fantastic family viewing.

If you’ve seen Planet Earth already, there is no reason at all to watch this. All this movie is is bits and pieces of Planet Earth. It just makes no sense.

MGM does a grand job in restoring this 1952 comedy classic to DVD perfection!!! Presented in Black/White, Standard Screen size (4:3 tv aspect ratio – before WideScreen (1953)).

This was Spencer Tracy’s & Katherine Hepburn’s 7th film together and as always are Classic Team mates!!! Now digitally remastered and on DVD makes it even better. Flawlessly digitalized makes the picture quality absolutely astounding to watch. Hepburns athletism can be more appreciated especially during the golf scenes when she drives the balls into the far distance (only now can we see these tiny spheres in the distance with DVD clarity!).

Summary; Masterfully directed by George Cukor, Athletic Pat (Hepburn) plays a very skillful amateur female sports nut who seems trapped in a rich socialite engaged to be married life. Mike (Tracy) a sports promoter eyes Hepburn in a Pro-Amatuer Golf match & sees a gold mine to be had. Hustling her to turn pro & be his client Hepburn decides this is a way to escape her miserable dominating fiances & to be married life. Hepburn shows hows some amazing athletic talents in golf & tennis. Tracy & Hepburn are a grand pair to watch & Hollywoods 1950’s happy ending prevails. This is a keeper and the DVD is a beauty!

Special Features include: Cast & Crew, Behind the Scenes, Theatrical Teaser & Trailer.

Pat & Mike is great family entertainment & Katherine Hepburn shows how women can be independent (wearing slacks), athletic (amazing golfer& tennis player) & feminine (beautiful & vunerable) all in one. Enjoy.

PAT & MIKE is the seventh Tracy-Hepburn collaboration, and it stars Spencer Tracy as Mike Conovan, the moneyminded sports racketeer with a heart of gold, and Katharine Hepburn (looking a great deal younger than she did in 1951’s THE AFRICAN QUEEN) as his beautiful ‘property’, Pat Pemberton. Pat is an all-round ‘lady athlete’, adept at golf and tennis (not to mention shooting, basketball and presumably swimming), but completely frazzled whenever her fiance Collier Weld (a suitably smarmy William Ching) is around and watching her. In a bid to become more in control of herself and her life, she (contrarily) submits to Mike’s management and he takes her around the country as a golf and tennis pro. It doesn’t take much imagination to realise what happens next–Mike’s ‘handling’ of Pat is the kind of handling she’s willing to accept (switch ‘Tracy’ for ‘Mike’ and ‘Hepburn’ for ‘Pat’ and you get also a description of Tracy and Hepburn’s real-life relationship), and before long, Collier is pretty much left in the dust.

This film is evidently a star vehicle for Tracy and Hepburn, containing next to no artistic pretensions or even any real attempt to press a subtle feminist point (in contrast with other Tracy/Hepburn films like WOMAN OF THE YEAR or ADAM’S RIB). In fact, the film seems to be just a comfortable, familiar joke between actors, writers and audience–we know these characters, we know these actors, we know what kind of relationship they always have (bantering, sparring, and in the end just a perfect fit)… the only thing that’s different is the names of the characters. Sam, Adam, Mike–Tess, Amanda, Pat–what’s the difference?

To be fair, Hepburn’s character of Pat Pemberton is much softer and more vulnerable than either Tess Harding or Amanda Bonner. This character variation doesn’t hide the real point of the screenplay though–Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin evidently wanted a chance to display both Hepburn’s natural athletic abilities (phenomenal for a non-professional, but possibly not 100% believable against sports stars like Babe Zaharias) and her incredible legs. Well, they did succeed at both of these things, to great effect. It’s great fun for a Hepburn fan, having read about her deep and abiding love of any and all sports, to get a chance to actually watch her playing golf and tennis onscreen. (This doesn’t mean, of course, that the frequent and long golf scenes don’t test one’s patience occasionally!)

Spencer Tracy has great fun as Mike as well, the sports agent who originally wants Pat to flub a game and come in second. He claims early on in the film that the trouble with her is that she’s got too honest a face–it’s only Tracy’s ability to make rough-and-tumble characters believably vulnerable at heart that makes his later declaration (”I must have caught something from you” i.e. honesty) acceptable. The chemistry between the two is probably closer to the comfortable rapport they shared in ADAM’S RIB as man and wife than the fireworks that went off between them in WOMAN OF THE YEAR. Whatever the case, it is still always a joy to watch Tracy and Hepburn together onscreen, and it’s largely because this film stars who it does that you can allow yourself to enjoy and be taken in by what is evidently a cutesy star vehicle written by the stars’ friends (Gordon and Kanin), and directed by the leading lady’s best and favourite director George Cukor. (Some of the visual tricks, particularly Hepburn’s face appearing on that of a horse, are actually more disturbing than flattering, and I–for one–would prefer not to pursue the metaphor through to its end.) Tracy and Hepburn are also boosted by an excellent supporting cast, particularly William Ching as Pat’s obnoxious suitor and Aldo Ray as Mike’s dimwitted star protege (until Pat comes along, that is!).

PAT & MIKE is a romantic comedy, but it’s also romantic-comedy-*lite*. There are no forced or fake separations that are geared towards wringing tears from viewers before a reconciliation (contrast again with ADAM’S RIB and most formulaic films in recent years). The film is just a little piece of joyful fluff–not taxing at all for either the writers, the actors, or the viewers. For a brilliant comic set-piece, watch out for the scene in which Pat takes on the two seedy sports racketeers and dispenses them with remarkable ease and efficiency. Otherwise, watch PAT & MIKE with the knowledge that this is neither Tracy and Hepburn’s best, nor is it their worst. If you keep your expectations down, you’ll certainly enjoy watching this film because it aims low (aiming only to please and amuse, and not necessarily to engage and thrill), and fulfils those aims very well. 8/10.
