Just as Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein are the most complex and impressive of all the classic Universal monster movies, Frankenstein The Legacy Collection is the most impressive of the three Legacy Collection DVD sets. Not only do you win five classic Frankenstein’s monster films, you also are treated to more numerous and critical extra features here than in the Dracula and Wolf Man Legacy Collection releases.

It is difficult to compare and inequity the different Universal monsters; my personal predilection draws me to Dracula, but I daresay Frankenstein’s monster is the most successful, memorable, and influential of the Dracula – Frankenstein’s monster -Wolf Man triad. The first two Frankenstein films are nothing short of incandescent (although I collected regret that they did not truly recreate the monster of Mary Shelley’s imaginative vision), with the sequel, Bride of Frankenstein, actually going one better than the recent. When you judge of Universal’s Dracula, you judge of Bela Lugosi; when you mediate of The Wolf Man, you contemplate of Lon Chaney, Jr. When you consider of Frankenstein, however, you mediate of Boris Karloff as the monster, Colin Clive as Dr. Frankenstein, Elsa Lanchester as the Bride of Frankenstein, James Whale as the ingenious director, Jack Pierce as the legendary awe make-up artist, etc. Virtually every last detail of the first two Frankenstein films is perfect, unforgettable, and remarkably complex – the vision, the style of presentation, the iconic performances, the make-up, the special effects, everything. Not even Dracula is as memorable in half as many ways as both Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein are.

Little more need be said of the first two Frankenstein films; they are the best of the Universal classics, and their complexity and appeal get them more improbable and impressive with each day that passes. But what of the other three films included here? Well, Frankenstein isn’t what he former to be under Whale’s direction. A lot of people seem to like Son of Frankenstein, but I glance this is as the beginning of the expansive, stupid Frankenstein’s monster stereotype that has stripped the monster of approved culture of the innocence and spacious human pathos that defined him early on. The film is most distinguished for being Karloff’s last performance in the role he made his beget, as the large dismay actor wisely wished to have no share in the now-inevitable dumbing-down of the monster. Featuring Basil Rathbone as Baron Wolf von Frankenstein, Bela Lugosi as Ygor, the broken-necked madman who befriends and to some degree controls the monster, and Lionel Atwill as the show-stealing Inspector Krogh, Son of Frankenstein robs the creature of his ability to content and thus denies him the intelligent vestige of humanity bestowed upon him in the unsurpassed Bride of Frankenstein.

The Ghost of Frankenstein continues the sage begun in Son of Frankenstein, this time introducing yet another Frankenstein son in the get of Dr. Ludwig Frankenstein (played most engagingly by Sir Cedric Hardwick) . Incredibly, both Ygor (Lugosi) and the monster (now played by Lon Chaney, Jr.) survived the slay of the previous film, and the pair space out to obtain yet another son of Frankenstein in hopes of restoring the monster’s strength (long baths in boiling sulphur followed by radical ice therapy can pick up a monster down) . Not surprisingly, the monster stirs up a limited anguish in town, and Ludwig’s attempt to undo his father’s crucial mistake by replacing the monster’s brain with a solid, non-criminal brain ultimately goes awry, thanks to Ygor and Ludwig’s traitorous assistant Dr. Bohmer (Lionel Atwill) . I actually found Ghost of Frankenstein to be a major improvement on the Son of Frankenstein storyline, although most fans seem to purchase Son of Frankenstein over this film.

House of Frankenstein boasts all three of the Universal monster heavyweights: Frankenstein’s monster (now played by Glenn Odd), the Wolf Man (Lon Chaney, Jr.), and Count Dracula (played by John Carradine – the world’s worst Dracula) . It also features Boris Karloff in the role of the indignant scientist who causes all sorts of peril. A sequel of sorts to Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, House of Frankenstein is a major disappointment in my eyes; only the Wolf Man character gets a decent treatment in this fun but rather insignificant film.

The extras in this collection are fabulous. For starters, you accept theatrical trailers for all the films except Son of Frankenstein, poster and photo galleries for Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, and a discussion by Van Helsing director Stephen Sommers of the pervading influence of Universal’s Frankenstein’s monster in the dismay movie industry. Frankenstein comes with a commentary by film historian Rudy Behlmer, while Bride of Frankenstein features commentary by film historian Scott MacQueen (one of the best commentaries I’ve heard) . Then there are two distinguished feature documentaries: The Frankenstein Files: How Hollywood Made a Monster looks support through the history of the Universal Frankenstein movies, while She’s Alive! Creating the Bride of Frankenstein examines the making of Bride of Frankenstein. Both of these features include extraordinary interviews with the daughter of Boris Karloff and the son of Dwight Frye. Finally, there is a short film called Boo! I was clueless as to what this could be, and I am unexcited unsure of its origins, but it is basically a slightly laughable dinky film featuring footage from Nosferatu, Frankenstein, and at least one other film.

This collection is not perfect (beware in particular a risky puny bump in the casing beneath each DVD, as each one is unbiased dying for the chance to scratch a disc) . Tranquil, considering how great material is included here, the Frankenstein Legacy Collection DVD location is a bargain that all Frankenstein fans would do well to snatch up. Of course, if you are alive to in Dracula and the Wolf Man as well as Frankenstein’s monster, peep into getting the all-inclusive Monster Legacy Collection.

I’ve been posting my film reviews on IMDb (Internet Movie Database), so if you’re animated of my opinions on the disclose, look what I have to say there. I honest wanted to write this to give you a warning about buying the DVDs: There’s a obliging chance that you’ll have to exchange your choose, even multiple times.

As others have well-known, there are two discs. One single sided that tends not to have any problems (Frankenstein and Bride are on that one), and the other double sided that tends to approach lose during shipping and become scratched (it contains Son, Ghost, House and the bulk of the extras) .

So far, I’ve gone through five copies of the plot and I have yet to obtain one that works for all of the films. And the jam doesn’t seem to fair be scratches. The fourth copy I received didn’t have a scratch on it, but Ghost of Frankenstein tranquil got stuck at about the 35 exiguous sign. There seems to be a manufacturing jam with the discs. So I’m not convinced that the scratches are causing the plight. After all, I’ve bought other titles as veteran DVDs from my local rental status that explore like a truck drove over them on a gravel road, and they played magnificent.

I initially bought the box position containing the Frankenstein, Dracula and Wolf Man Legacy collections, and each one had at least one film that was marred. I’ve received the second copies of Dracula and the Wolf Man, but I haven’t watched all of the films in them again yet; there’s a suitable chance the second copies will have glitches there, too, since the packaging/manufacturing is identical, as it also is on Universal’s Mummy, Creature from the Shaded Lagoon and Invisible Man Legacy Collections. I recently bought my first sets of those three, as well, but I haven’t watched any of them yet. I’m almost disturbed too. At this point, I tend to behold the films with a nervous anticipation akin to checking yourself for a tumor, and you withhold finding one. Not exactly an appetizing experience, even though I admire the films.

You’d deem by now I’d learn and wouldn’t even be bothering–after at least 7 dreadful sets (the five Frankensteins and the one Dracula and Wolf Man) but I want these films on DVD! I unbiased want a copy that works!

Last time Universal released them (the slow 1990s or early 2000s) they were only on the market for 18 months before they pulled the journey. I didn’t seize them then, and I regretted it. They pulled the budge to eventually release these more budget-priced but cheaply made replacements that won’t work! I would have gladly spent twice the amount or more for these films if I could honest have DVDs that don’t regain stuck.

I’m far from the only one experiencing this predicament, and for some others who haven’t notorious the plight yet, I’m wondering if they tried watching all of the films–wait until a year down the road or so when they finally believe, “Let’s give House of Frankenstein a chance” and then witness that it gets stuck. With the amount of returns Universal must be getting, it seems like maybe they’d revamp the packaging/manufacturing as soon as possible. They must be losing money on these, or terminate to it. Maybe by my 50th time returning Frankenstein, I’ll find one with unusual packaging that isn’t flawed.

These are three musical comedies from the WWII era. It’s been some time since I’ve seen “This is the Army”. I’ve seen the other two ravishing recently. I intersperse the press releases with my hold remarks.

This is the Army (1942)

Press release:

Irving Berlin showed his abiding appreciate for his adopted country with, among other cultural accomplishments, decades of Broadway hits, the unofficial national anthem “God Bless America” and the World War II spirit-lifter This Is the Army. On stage it featured 350 real-life GIs, giving their singing-and- dancing all to raise nearly $2 million (then an great sum) for Army Emergency Relief.

My remarks:

Irving Berlin actually sings in this one – and not too well. According to one fable, after Berlin sang “Oh How I Despise To Derive Up In The Morning”, one stagehand was overheard saying to another, “If the guy who wrote that could’ve heard how this guy unprejudiced sang that song, he’d roll over in his grave.” I got this anecdote from someone over at imdb, but I can absorb it happened. Vast music, but a rather musty storyline. However, you have to remember at this point it was early in the war and the outcome was yet unknown. With everything on the line, people needed this kind of escapist entertainment.

Thank Your Lucky Stars (1943)

Press Release:

Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, and Dinah Shore approach out to play in the joyous World War II-era Thank Your Lucky Stars. A breezy, behind-the-Hollywood-scenes narrative about young talents hoping for a expansive demolish glitters with specialty numbers featuring Golden Era greats.

My remarks:

The best of the three films in the bunch, this film does something that nothing else on DVD does to my knowledge – gives us a ample dose of Eddie Cantor. Eddie Cantor insists upon being chairman of the Cavalcade of Stars relieve note, in return for the exhaust of his vocalist, Dinah Shore. Eddie keeps disrupting the exhibit and insisting on doing things his plot. To complicate matters, there is a obvious cab driver who very closely resembles Eddie. In fact, he can’t win hired as an actor because of the conclude resemblance. Eddie does a colossal job of playing both roles. Other stars performing in the film as themselves include Olivia De Havilland, John Garfield, Ida Lupino, Ann Sheridan, and Jack Carson.

Hollywood Canteen (1944)

The dependable Hollywood Canteen was the invention of John Garfield and Bette Davis. It was a spot where the stars did not only the performing but also waited on the troops. This is a light romantic chronicle interesting a couple of soldiers spending three nights at the Canteen before they must return to duty. As with the other movies, the main reason to sight is the expansive entertainment provided by the Warner stars.

This looks to be a broad collection and I’m looking forward to viewing both the movies and the extras.

I was previously familiar with the three films featured in the “Warner Bros. and the Homefront Collection”. My reason for the prefer was to add a high quality DVD situation that represented the Warners studio contract players during the height of the studio system. ” Thank your Lucky Stars” {particularly Bette Davis singing her wartime lament, “They’re Either too Young or too Venerable”) and “Hollywood Canteen” were beautifully transferred to the DVD format. “This is the Army”, the only movie in color, was a ample disappointment. The represent was lacking in detail and the color was too brightly saturated and erroneous. Surely, Warners can do better.

Amazing. Just a few days ago I was thinking about a film that I saw in elementary school (Fairfield Elementary School, Long Island, NY). It was about a little boy and a red balloon that escaped his grasp. I was trying to remember if the film had spoken words, and I thought that it did not. I was thinking about how it was such an unusual film, and how unusual it was that I should remember it almost 30 years later. I made a mental note to some day find it.

Tonight, I sat here browsing Amazon, and I just fell upon it. The Red Balloon. I must have it. Funny, I can’t remember if it made me laugh or cry. I just know that it is a memorable part of my childhood, and if I have an opportunity to recapture some little memory of a more simple time in my life, then I must seize that opportunity.

To all the other “kids” out there who remember this film… I’ll see you on the playground.

This film is an absolute work of art! It tells the beautiful story of a young boy and his only friend: a big red balloon. Their friendship is true and the living balloon follows the little boy wherever he goes. They play with each other, trust each other… they are together for good!

A very simple and beautiful story… one that makes you remember how good it is to be a kid. …all the possibilities… all the imagination and the innocence we lose when we grow up. This film will touch everyone who sees it.

The only problem is the print they used for this DVD. Absolutely horrible! Full of scratches and marks… (there are silent films in better shape!) it seems someone dragged the film stock on a street to make it look bad. I cannot believe such an important film had such a lack of caring. The soundtrack is also bad and the rich Technicolor is gone. I was lucky enough to see this film on the big screen during the seventies and… believe me… it was beautiful. Nothing like this.

I knew this print was bad because I read the other reviews, and yet, I bought it because I felt I must have it (for I love this film). But it was still shocking to see how bad a bad print can be.

I think this film is a masterpiece and I will buy it again if this is ever restored and released again… but this is an european film and I do not see that (restoration… or a new print) coming soon. So I bought it anyway – think like this: not even in France this film is available… go figure why!

A beautiful film that is worth every scratch… but it is a shame… Films like this one should be seen over and over and I am sure if it was to be rereleased it would be a success. Perhaps one day someone like Criterion (who for once released it in Laserdisc a looong time ago) will take this film and give the treatment it deserves.

By the way, the DVD comes with an american animated cartoon : “The Pincushion Man”. It is about a ballon-like city with ballon-like characters. The print is equally bad. It is an early thirties “silly symphonies-like” color cartoon produced by Castle Films. The film is nice and it leaves you wondering about how many great films are there left to rot. …
