…if you have the least interest in this film-BUY the current DVD. It’s simply astounding. I’ve scanned these reviews here, and apparently there was an earlier DVD yell that wasn’t up to par at ALL-but rest assured, this reasonably-priced “Special Edition” looks and sounds crisp, clean-and stunningly gorgeous. Obviously I loved the film when it was originally released, and plenty of others did as well-see reviews below. But watching this unique DVD the other night, I was struck at how fabulous this movie really is: in the first spot, it’s rare(to save it mildly!) for a film nearly 20 years musty to not glance “dated” at ALL-this one doesn’t. It could have been shot yesterday. I’d be willing to bet that in 15 years “Shakespeare in Esteem” *will* inspect somehow “slow ’90s”-it’s the norm for period costume pieces to wind up reflecting the styles of the times they were made, even if we can’t discover it without the distance of years passing. What an achievement, then for James Ivory, Ismail Merchant, and the designers/cinematographer/costumer…and the actors-! Splendid, all of them. The second audio track is, I’m disquieted, a minute superfluous(although it was luscious to hear the producers chatting away with Simon Callow-”the Rev. Beebe”-and the only actor to describe commentary, alas) …but it doesn’t matter a whit. Truly one of those things where everything came together perfectly. If you select this, you’ll have a spacious shot at converting a few jaded kids(assuming you’ve got some around the house) to the glories of another time and residence, and *real* romance(and objective about the sexiest kisses you could ask for) . Relish!

I dare anyone to say anything negative about this movie. I cannot assume of one element of this movie that disappointed me. I like the romance between Miss Lucy Honeychurch and Mr George Emerson. I love the frustrating, “unpleasant Charlotte Bartlett”, Lucy’s go companion and thorn-in-her-side in matters of the heart. I esteem Cecil, wonderfully pompous Cecil. I want to be like Eleanor Lavish, the adventure-seeking, scandal-relishing novelist Charlotte and Lucy meet in Florence. Freddy and Mr Beebe provide exquisite laughable relief, as do the sparkling Miss Allens. And who could not appreciate George’s doddering feeble Dad, Mr Emerson, especially when he upsets a tour group with his travelogue asides? If anyone is haunted that their favourite book will suffer at the hands of uncaring, ignorant film makers, please, unfurrow your brow and glance this movie. E.M. Forster’s characters are brought to life by some of Britain’s finest actors. The film is wonderfully scripted, beautifully filmed and majestically located. (There are only a handful of films that can claim to have created recede pangs in my Aussie-bound Dad.) It is a film I luxuriate in coming succor to over and over again.

My class of fifteen “learning disabled” students read the book “Freak the Powerful”. These are at risk students who for the most share, could care less about reading anything. They absolutely loved the book! Every day at bell time I would hear, “No, we can’t halt here!” Some even wanted to prefer the book home and read ahead! While watching the film, I noticed some 6th grade boys with tears in their eyes and the girls were simply dissolved in tears. This is a fantastic movie for people of all ages but particularly for those kids who sometimes feel like they slide in Max and Freak’s footsteps every day. We also read the sequel, “Max the Much” and found it equally as appealing. We are hoping there is a movie sequel! Thank you Rodman Philbrick for writing such a glowing, memorable account! Kudos to the cast of “The Distinguished” for their performances. I intend to bewitch a copy for myself and several for gifts.

How in the HELL did this movie accumulate lost in theatres? Why didn’t every critic in America stammer the world to seek it?

I remember when I first heard that this book, FREAK THE Worthy (by Rodman Philbrick), was going to be made into a movie and that Gillian Anderson was going to play a runt role. Well, I went ahead and read the book because (a) I’m an X-Files fan, and (b) I wanted to know what so drew her to the project that she was willing to play a less than a major role.

The book honest tore me apart– it wasn’t unprejudiced that I’d been a misfit myself in my youth, but the fact that it dealt with sometimes wonderful, sometimes painful situations in such a clear-eyed method, never pandering to or underestimating the intelligence of the reader.

This film, while not adhering to the book to the letter (but damned halt) kept the SPIRIT of the book intact, and for that I credit not only the director and screenwriter but the cast. Everyone enthusiastic seems to be most concerned with truth– not is it dramatic, is it murky, is it amusing, but is it Fair?

While I credit all fervent parties with making this film work so well, I have to say that NONE of it would have worked had it not been for the two leads, Elden Hensen and Kieran Culkin. These two Improbable young men are so utterly concerned with their characters as human beings that there is not a single untrue trace in either performance. Going in, Culkin has an additional challenge/handicap– the wiseacre type honed by his brother Macauley might well have been expected here, given the no-apologies intelligence that characterizes Kevin/Freak. But Culkin has no interest in unbiased getting laughs– he seems entirely aware that there are more valuable treasures to be had from this material.

That’s not to say that there aren’t moments that invent you smile or yes, laugh, but they happen through the comedy of CHARACTER, not space. There are no cheap emotions on the hide, nor do they try to elicit them from the viewer. When you laugh and yell at this movie, it is because you feel a Portion of the proceedings, not that this is something build in front of you merely to entertain. It is positive why such stellar actors (Anderson, Sharon Stone, Harry Dean Stanton, Gena Rowlands, James Gandolfini) were drawn to this project– there is more than enough well-drawn, colorful material to go around, even to the smallest of roles. I also felt that the film improved on the new by giving it a bit more an ending; the book objective kind of STOPPED, and I was joyful to discover a bit more resolution. These characters deserved it.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Mighty! Click Here

I give the film 4 stars rather than 5 because of (a) the all-too-real violence and threatened violence seems jarring at times (as it did in the book as well) and (b) the lack of extras on this edition (a truncated late the scenes featurette and NO commentary tracks, which is positively CRIMINAL given the talent alive to) .

So even though neither the film nor the presentation (although the music video by Sting is kind of fun) is perfect, do NOT let that dissuade you from seeing this film. You will not recognize its like again soon.

During our modern swagger to Rome, like most tourists, we shopped for a DVD of the Vatican to bring home. As you would imagine, there were many versions, and each more expensive than the other. So,we decided to wait until we returned and examine for one on Amazon. Once again, Amazon did not disappoint us. This DVD is a unbelievable, informative, pictorial visit to St. Peters’ and the Vatican. Statues, places, and things that we were so fortunate to spy, are once again revisited on this DVD. I would highly recommend this DVD to anyone planning a visit to Rome, or anyone who wishes that they could.

This region of five DVDs is a must-have for people who fancy to go and who have been, or want to visit, Rome and the Vatican. The series was presented on PBS and presents over seven hours of scream. It is the most informative documentary produced in elephantine cooperation of the Catholic Church I have ever seen and is completely up-to-date with the latest Pope and what the Catholic Church faces with today’s realities and its challenges. It has astounding videography and the narration is very fine, although the narrator translating into English what the people speaking Italian are saying is rather difficult to understand at times. The first disc is a preview of the entire series and gives a taste of the vow of each DVD. A disc menu tells you what is being covered and lets you determine which component you want to watch next. You are taken leisurely the scenes of life within the Vatican City-State, some of the history of the Catholic Church which explains some of the traditions, the routines of life in the Vatican, discusses the Swiss Guard and their life in the Vatican, shows the life of the alter boys who live in the Vatican, shows the exhaust of media–print, radio and television, and discusses the symbolism of some of the frescos that I had never really understood or the underlying allegory being presented in the various artworks. It also shows the painstaking restoration of textiles, statues and the frescos of the Sistine Chapel. One of the most wonderful secrets is the excavation underneath St. Peter’s Basilica seeking the bones of St. Peter–this secret was known by very few people while it was going on and the DVD shows some of the sincere excavation and what was found. I highly recommend this dwelling to everyone, and you do not have to be Catholic to marvel at the blooming artwork commissioned by and maintained in the Vatican for centuries. It is a improbable bargain at the notice and is a keeper in a video library.

Destroy All Planets

First off, these are the AIP edition of the movies. Uncensored prints of Attack of the Monster are extremely rare, and I haven’t seen any uncensored English editions. These movies have changed hands more than the Godzilla movies, and I don’t know the differences between the two English editions I’ve heard about besides the dubbing. Any older Gamera movie is hard to glean in any video format so this could be all we ogle for a long time on DVD. Both movies are pan / scan editions and from 16mm.

The first movie is Attack of the Monsters (aka Gamera vs. Guillon or Gamera vs. Guiron – depending on your source. Neptune Video primitive the first spelling, a reference book broken-down the second) . A boy and his friend peer a UFO through his telescope and believe they know where it landed. The boy’s sister finds the flying saucer, and the two boys accept inside fair as it takes off on autopilot. The flying saucer looks alot like the Jupiter 2 with fins and a spinning thing on top. No one will listen to the girl’s fable about what happened except for one police officer. Meanwhile, the two boys are stuck on a planet with two female aliens who want to eat their brains. The monster Guillon is under the aliens’ control. This print is censored with Guillon’s fight with Location Gyaos being carve short.

The second movie is Ruin All Planets (aka Gamera vs. Viras) . This is the first time for me to ever leer this so I can’t comment on what might be censored. Two boys in an experimental submarine are captured by an alien ship and become prisoners. However, the aliens are really after Gamera since he is their main obstacle to conquering Earth. The aliens catch Gamera long enough to save a mind control map. Later, Viras is released to fight Gamera. (I can’t account for why without giving a spoiler.) This movie uses many scenes from previous movies as the aliens try to catch a intention to defeat Gamera. Even some of the “current” scenes appear to exercise ancient footage even from the recent dark and white Gamera movie – tinted red here.

These movies are presented as you might have seen them broadcast on TV – before cable TV came along. The screech acting is OK. Both movies have a copyright of 1969. The novel edition of Extinguish All Planets was release one year earlier in Japan.

I could do without the Dragnet-style music during the FBI warning. The face of the DVD looks like a video occupy.

I don’t like the menus on this DVD. I normally hold that the brightest item is the selected one. With only two menu items (the title of each movie), it’s not easy to whisper at first that the item highlighted with green and somewhat dimmed is the selected movie. Plus, the menu comes up with the second (bottom) movie highlighted. The submenus for each movie are easier to navigate.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Destroy All Planets! Click Here

Each movie menu includes a photo collection. Under Attack of the Monsters, the images include movie posters and artwork for the VHS cases, LaserDisc slipcase, and DVD inserts. This includes material for all of the used movies plus the 1995 one. There are even illustrations of the monsters’ anatmony (the same ones that are on the official Japanese web state) . Under Kill All Planets, the images are mainly production photos. These pictures are not quiet frames. They are presentations dwelling to music with each image appearing for approximately 7 seconds.

Personally, I’d purchase to eye the edition that Neptune Video had released on tape. I only got their subtitled letterboxed tapes so I don’t know what their dubbed tapes were like except for the recent 1965 movie. I don’t know if their dubbed tape was like the AIP edition or not. I would like to glance all of these older Gamera movies on DVD – released in both subtitled and dubbed as well as letterboxed.

Gamera vs Viras is generally regarded as an average – if not subpar, entry in the 60’s showa era of Gamera films. I disagree, I contemplate it tied for 1st with Gamera vs Monster X, which contains an superior “Improbable Voyage” inspired fantasy sequence. After Gamera vs Baragon, the showa series directed its efforts toward making science fantasy for children. Yuasa blazed a trek in developing this original genre and in this film he hits his walk. Measured against this just, Gamera vs Viras is both novel and effective. Glimpse it with an 8 year faded and you’ll inspect what I mean, the sense of wonder when viewed by its intended audience has not diminished over time.

The film is probably 80% special effects, and the action starts in the first frame. The non-effects sequences are not over-long and do not tax the attention span of a child like many Toho efforts of the era. The children are not annoying and are resourceful and mischievious, children composed represent to these characters. Don’t laugh – Speilberg, I judge, might have been influenced by many of the elements in films like this. Like Speilberg, Yuasa was one of the originators of shooting his films from the POV of a child. It’s gleaming, effective, and he blazed the race that other filmmakers followed. There’s a reason why these films are peaceful remembered fondly and are serene effective with kids 40 years later, and their coarse effects and grievous budget do not diminish their effectiveness. Do you deem the filmmakers of today didn’t bustle home to gawk Gamera flicks as kids and weren’t influenced by the techniques created by Yuasa? I do.

However, what sets this film apart are the sequences aboard the alien ship. I glean these sequences imaginative and show the bargain basement resoucefullness of Yuasa. These scenes, and the film as a whole, has a surreal dream-like quality that I fill Yuasa intended. It’s like stepping into a child’s giant monster fantasy, and succeeds in this regard far more than Honda’s attempt in Godzilla’s Revenge.

Although a titanic deal of the film is padded with stock footage – particularly the scenes where Gamera’s memory is scanned by the aliens to choose his weakness – and the complete battles with Baragon and Gayos are shown, it’s a safe intention to explore these other films if you don’t want to consume the collection. The incorporation of these flashback elements are done sensibley within the context of the site.

The effects are a mixed bag in terms of realism, as always. But – also, as always, are radiant and enthralling. There’s some nice traveling matte work as Viras is shown growing gain human size to a giant, and a particularly nice minature work of Gamera’s destruction of a dam is included. It’s nice to survey Gamera destroying some cities while under alien control. And the film has a surprising number of reasonably effective composite shots.

As typical in a Gamera film, Viras is an modern, imaginative Kaiju – a snide between a situation squid and a banana. The final battle between Gamera and Viras is one of the more sage Kaiju fights. The impalement sequence – which Gamera somehow survives, pushes the envelope in terms of intensity (and surrealism) for kids. The “water skiing” scene is a classic of kaiju silliness.

Anyway – colossal underappreciated 60’s kaiju flick. Well worth the bargain trace of 8 bucks for the DVD.

The DVD of Sondheim’s INTO THE WOODS is not that grand other than the fact that it’s grand to have this amazing television production available in the format. The narrate is crisp and the sound is pristine. There are no extras on the disc. I do relish the chapters, however. Unlike my video tape version, it’s colossal to be able to skip to a particular song I wish to understanding.

INTO THE WOODS is such a colossal prove. The first act is hilarious and witty. It very smartly weaves together all those fairy tales so familiar to us all. Then act two makes us leer at them through adult eyes. I judge Sondheim and Lapine are telling us that in fairy tales as well as “right” life, the simple words “I wish…” are truly the beginning of whatever record each of us is about to direct. They counsel us to be careful of what we wish in life — our wishes attain everyone.

My popular song in this production is “The Last Midnight” which is performed by Bernadette Peters as the Witch. It is very macabre and Sondheim reveals so considerable about the Witch’s character through the lyrics. Plus, it gives Ms. Peters an opportunity to belt!

INTO THE WOODS is a hoot! Devour it.

Except for this one…

Bernadette Peters is so perfect as the former crone witch who turns exquisite at the demolish of the first act. She plays the bitter self-loathing cynic to perfection: when she sings “Last Midnight” its extraordinary, and of course the bittersweet “Lament”/”Children Will Listen” ties everything together…well, perfectly. A riot, and she can really belt out a tune!

At least as improbable as Ms. Peters is Tony Award-winning Joanna Gleason who is completely smart as the baker’s wife. Her interactions with Kim Crosby (Cinderella), each night after the Festival, sparkle: every time I observe the exchange that ends with, “I need your shoe to have a child!” I nearly drop off my chair; her appearance as a ghost at the ruin is touching and a puny gloomy.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Into the Woods! Click Here

Kim Crosby herself is quite helpful as Cinderella, and Danielle Ferland is fabulous as the jaded and cynical (and a itsy-bitsy bloodthirsty) Runt Red Riding Hood (she gets it from grannie, who keeps thinking of curved ways to torture the wolf after they run), and her song “I Know Things Now,” is a cute dinky song (with unprejudiced a hint of sexual imagery) about a young woman coming of age.

Some things to spy for:

- Cinderella’s birds

- the horse that moves backwards

- “Milky White,” especially after the baker gets tired of leading(dragging) her, and picks her up by the handle on her top

- the stepmother cutting off her daughter’s heel and then picking it up by stabbing it with the knife like a allotment of ham

- “Agony” by the two princes

- “No One Is Alone”

- and lastly, “Your Fault.”

It’s also worth mentioning that the lighthearted fun in the first act is matched perfectly with the shadowy and sober mood in the second act, although it may be a miniature heavy for young children.

Mentionable quotes:

“I don’t like that woman!” – The Baker, about the Witch

“I was raised to be charming, not actual.” – Cinderella’s prince

“I was fair trying to be a proper mother.” – The Witch to Rapunzel

“Slotted spoons don’t own mighty soup.” – Jack’s mother

“There are times I do actually indulge in cleaning.” – Cinderella

“You can talk to birds…? ” – Dinky Red Riding Hood to Cinderella

“…some of us don’t like the design you’ve been telling it…” – The Witch to the narrator, unbiased before she sacrifices him to the giant

I could retain going… suffice to say, it’s a fave.

Okay, so Tom Soar gets a job at a Memphis law firm, legal? We’ve all read the book or seen the movie, so how does one recommend this to one uninitiated?

Cruise puts in a solid performance, again playing his guy-who-doesn’t-catch-on-for-a-while character he does so well. Sydney Pollack is a gigantic mainstream director, and he pushes all the buttons, as well as giving us a big cast including Gene Hackman, Holly Hunter, Ed Harris, Jeanne Tripplehorn, David Straithairn, Gary Busey, Hal Holbrook, and Wilford Brimley.

Top-notch acting all around, with especially obedient turns by Brimley and Hunter, playing against type. Hackman is always well-behaved to eye and he does a terrific job of making Avery Tolar a likeable guy in spite of his faults. I dispute the most improbable job was done by David Straithairn, who, with less than ten minutes of shroud time, paints an indelible portrait of Ray McDeere, Cruise’s convict brother. He is the most likeable character in the film.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Firm! Click Here

The position is the standard rising-above-conflict stuff. Inspect this movie (again) for the performances, or for the aesthetic find from Dave Grusin and try to ignore the changes from the book (which I believe were justified in making the ending more cinematic and Hollywood) .

Nothing can be better than “The Firm” written by John Grisham, who himself is a lawyer. The attentions to details that Grisham manages to pull are honest incredible. I read the book before watching the movie, and hence can compare and assert that the movie has been directed perfectly and in fact a lot more though-provoking than the book, as the book gets dead in between, but not the movie.

Cruise’s is friendly, so are the other actors in this movie. I don’t know why people have given negative reviews by comparing it with sincere life scenarios. This is a movie based on a fiction original, and as rightly said by one of reviewer here;it does its job by bewitching the audiences.
