Have you ever encountered a TV series which, from the first episode on, became an irreplaceable allotment of your identity, titillating you in ways impossible to recount but felt profoundly? FLAMBARDS was that resplendent a series. Status in the years surrounding the First World War, the legend depicts how Christina, a young orphan sent to live with her cousins and uncle at a decaying country estate, Flambards, comes of age amid the conflicts, passions, loyalties, and tragedies which follow from her fresh life. Her uncle Russell, wheelchair-bound for life due to a fox-hunting accident, compounds his pains through heavy drinking by the fireplace, and takes his sole pleasure in life from the vicarious adventures in the hunting field which his rugged son Imprint shares with him. They are callous to their servants, and cannot understand anyone who does not section their absorption in the world of hunting, hounds, and endless leisure. Mark’s brother William could not be more different. Gentle, sympathetic to the servants and the spot of their class, and passionately devoted to the make, building and flying of planes, he too is injured while keen in the one sport he hates – fox-hunting – and must now dart with a limp. Christina, in her leisurely teens like William, prefers his gentle company, yet thrills to the excitement of the fox-hunt. And she soon learns that her mountainous inheritance, due when she is twenty-one, has been earmarked for the restoration of Flambards – and that she is to marry Heed, who, among other brutalities, has provoked the firing of Violet, the kitchen maid, after making her pregnant! The rest of the series portrays the growing attraction of Christina and William, their hasten from Flambards into the world of the early aviators, and the disruptions in their novel life resulting from the memoir slaughter of the First World War. Everything in this series is unbiased right: the casting of Christine McKenna and Alan Parna by as Christina and William, the stirring footage of restored early airplanes in blooming flight (state to the haunting background music of David Fanshawe, itself worth the eleven-and-a-half hours you’ll use loving this series), the tenderness of the scenes where William and Christina recognize their adore for each other, the portrayal of a bygone age of English social life serve form FLAMBARDS a series with something for everybody. But what lifts this series into the realm of the incredible for me is its unaffected embodiment of human goodness and innocence, of nobility and the dauntless, and of how these qualities can depart us mild, in a time when we need them more than ever. The gist of THE LADY EVE is ably summed up by Barbara Stanwyck’s character in the first half of the film: “The ample girls are never as righteous as they seem to be, and the terrible ones never as unpleasant.” In this movie, Barbara plays Jean Harrington, a “poor girl” who is not as unpleasant as she seems to be, who later pretends to be Eve Sidgwick, a “righteous girl” who isn’t as qualified.

In my concept, this is the greatest romantic comedy ever made. Other films may be more romantic, others funnier, but not a single one combines both elements so perfectly. Everything about this film sparkles. Preston Sturges, one of the finest screenwriters in the history of cinema, turned out one of his most perfect scripts.. The details, the transitions between scenes, the wit, the lightning creep, the suited oneliners, the cascading dialog, absolutely everything marks this as a Preston Sturges production. The cast is utterly beyond reproach. Absolutely no one in the history of film could have been more perfect in the central role as Barbara Stanwyck. Other men could have played the Henry Fonda share, but he was nonetheless respectable in his role, one of the very few comedic parts he managed in his career. Charles Coburn sparkles as “Gorgeous” Harry Harrington, unprejudiced as he excelled in a dozen or so other immense films from the thirties, forties, and fifties. Eugene Palette, the finest Friar Tuck there ever was or ever could be, is enjoyable as Henry Fonda’s beleaguered father. William Demarest is a fixture in nearly all of Preston Sturges’s films, and while his role is not as mammoth here as in some of the others (like HAIL THE CONQUERING HERO, SULLIVAN’S TRAVELS, or THE MIRACLE OF MORGAN’S CREEK), he nonetheless manages to recall nearly every scene he is in.

THE LADY EVE is easily one of the most sexual films of the Hays era. There is a grand deal of barely concealed sexual innuendo, beginning with the title (”Eve”, the temptress), to the moment when Henry Fonda first climbs up the ladder onto the ocean liner that picks him up at the beginning of the movie (Barbara Stanwyck drops an apple that hits him on the head), to the fantastic seduction scene (no sex, but at the demolish of the scene you know Henry Fonda goes encourage to his cabin for a long, icy shower) . I am not clear that the forties ever pictured a man filled with greater sexual desire than when Henry was holding Barbara’s leg while putting on her shoes, lost in her perfume. Indeed, the entire segment extending from the second when Barbara Stanwyck initiates meeting Henry by tripping him (one of six pratfalls he will rob in the film, if one includes his falling in the mud upon disembarking from his “honeymoon” yelp) to her sending him out of her cabin in a station of intensely heightened sexual awareness, is utterly wonderful. As someone who grew up watching Barbara Stanwyck on THE Colossal VALLEY, seeing that sequence for the first time was a revelation. I had no view that the woman was that sexy.

The greatest thing about THE LADY EVE is that it gets better with each viewing. I have to strongly disagreee with the editorial review of this film, when he says that it is hard to say whether BALL OF FIRE or THE LADY EVE is funnier: I have seen BALL OF FIRE and THE LADY EVE approximately four times and nine times respectively. The price of a really ample film is how it stands up to reviewing. BALL OF FIRE is stout the first time but lessens somewhat upon reviewing (Howard Hawks is obliging, but it is not one of his stronger films), but THE LADY EVE improves each time in every procedure. Like I said, in my belief, one of the best romantic comedies ever made.

Preston Sturges’ “The Lady Eve” is one of the best romantic comedies ever made, partly because while it’s very droll, it’s also hits a very deep nerve. It’s painful to be in adore, as both Charles Pike (a wonderfully gullible and naive Henry Fonda) and Jean Harrington (tough/tender Barbara Stanwyck at her very best) gain out, the hard intention. Stanwyck plays a card shark who along with her father (Charles Coburn) are on a coast ship, with the stutter purpose of fleecing the other passengers. Charles Pike is a rich heir to a brewery fortune who’s unprejudiced spent the last year studying snakes in the Amazon. In the noted scene at the beginning of the film, Jean spots Charles in her compact mirror and then gives a running commentary of how every woman in the room is trying to attract the attention of this young, beautiful, completely oblivious bachelor. When Charles walks by, Jean trips him. Her heel breaks off, and she browbeats Charles into accompanying her serve to her cabin for a recent pair of shoes. Thus begins one of the most sexually charged romances ever filmed.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Lady Eve – Criterion Collection! Click Here

While Jean’s fresh intentions were malicious, she soon falls for Charles (whom she affectionately calls Flopsy) in a substantial scheme. Despite her husky suppose and revealing dresses, there’s something rather virginal and tender about Jean. Unlike many screwball comedy heroines, Jean doesn’t effect Flopsy down or try to outwit him. She idolizes him. When he discovers her occupation, he dumps her, and she’s reduced to a mammoth puddle of tears. But … hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. To give away any more of the station would be criminal. Stanwyck and Fonda have astonishing chemistry, and while both of them are playing stereotyped, stock characters, they infuse their roles with so grand heart and humanity. Barbara Stanwyck has a husky assure and a worldly personality, but she’s also a wide-eyed romantic, which makes this movie so exciting. It’s one of the movie’s endearing aspects that both Flopsy and Jean are kinda … nutty. It’s a match made in heaven.

The Criterion Collection has less extras than usual, perhaps because all the participants of the film are long stupid. There’s an interview with Peter Bogdanovich, a commentary track with Marion Keane, a 1942 radio broadcast (with Ray Milland subbing for Honda), and some publicity stills. The audio and video transfer are estimable. Marion Keane’s commentary track is very palatable. Unlike many commentary tracks, Keane doesn’t utilize an endless amount of time analyzing shots and angles and lighting. She comments more about the emotions and sexual innuendo in this movie. The Lady Eve is such a grand film that the lack of a boatload of extras didn’t bother me at all. I’m objective grateful that this unbelievable film is released on DVD.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Lady Eve – Criterion Collection! Click Here

The Lady Eve is enormous because at heart it’s a really touching adore anecdote. When I watched the film the second time, I was surprised at how small “laugh out loud” droll moments there were. It’s more romance than comedy, but therein lies it’s strength. There are no cheap laughs. The Lady Eve is one of the few romantic comedies that also depicts gracious heartbreak. And it only gets better upon repeated viewings.

Growing up, I was a reliable horse-freak, and considered myself a connoisseur of all-things-horse, especially movies. The Dim Stallion has always been one of my favorites.

Of course, it doesn’t injure any movie to be executive-produced by Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather I,II,III) . But what really shines through in this film is the attractive cinematography and camera work, and the acting by Cass Ole (”The Gloomy”), Kelly Reno (Alec) and of course, Mickey Rooney, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

This film really captures the mood and feeling of the first “Sad Stallion” book. There is virtually no dialogue for a satisfactory allotment of the film, and it is not missed. The on-screen relationship between Alec and The Dismal is one that could not be expressed in words under any circumstances.

When I first received this DVD, I achieve it in to gaze it with my father on Christmas night a few years ago. During the island scenes between Alec and The Dark, I stifled tears; the scenes – the photography is that aesthetic.

I was enthralled by this movie as a 13-year-old girl with a passion for horses, and I feel the same design as a 36-year-old.

Buy this DVD for your children, or consume this DVD for you, but grasp this DVD. It will rapidly become a accepted!

It is with ample pleasure I can swear you that I have sat through nearly every horse movie ever made – and that “The Murky Stallion” is calm the best one I have ever seen.

Every aspect of the film is superlative; the casting, the acting, the adaptation to screenplay, the music, the sounds, the editing, the characterization and most especially, the cinematography. But the right genius of the film lies in director Carroll Ballard’s graceful ability to render his main character, namely the dark stallion himself, on the conceal.

Since I have experience with horses I am obviously very aware of how films utilize their equine actors. Errors are immediately apparent. This film does not have any. Every time a horse is onscreen, characterization in action and expression is perfect.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Black Stallion! Click Here

Credit, of course, goes to trainer Corky Randall, and also to the decision to cast Kelly Reno and Mickey Rooney, horsemen themselves, into the human roles.

Tremendous credit also goes out to the filmmakers for making the concern to rep animals who would fit the role so well – proper shadowy arabian stallions. Most would not have gone to the misfortune, preferring to work with geldings, or with any breed of horse with the principal color and training to design the role. Unprejudiced see to other essential horse films, like Dismal Beauty, The Horse Whisperer and SeaBiscuit, to examine how the horse is changed to fit the film.

One of the best examples of the film’s genius with the horses is the scene in which Alec and “The Dismal” first become friends. The film shows the stallion who played that fraction of the scene retreating each time the boy walks toward him, then advancing each time he walks away. By degrees of come and retreat is Alec finally able to secure discontinuance to the horse.

Such behavior mimics a horse’s natural response perfectly. But it is not simply how it was it was choreographed; it is how the horse plays the fraction. The animal does not tamely whisk forward and backwards – he displays a spirit and impatience of a gorgeously trained animal being do through a difficult series of steps; superior but with considerable character. On film, this highly charged personality mimics perfectly the dismay and inflame of a wild stallion trying to cope with coming finish to a being he regards with suspicion.

Trivia for those interested; Cass-Ole, the stallion to whom lead credit was given, actually had 4 white socks and the star. In the cessation shots, you can look the white under the makeup. It was Cass Ole and Kelly Reno who did most true scenes, such as galloping without bridle and saddle down the beach. Most films spend doubles for such scenes.

Fae-Jur, the main double, was also a dim stallion; it is rumored he was not even a good unlit, but a grey who had to be dyed extensively to play the role. He is said to have done many of the “wild” scenes, when no rider was required.

The film gets my highest recommendation for both adults and children. Some may be frustrated by the artistic slant of the epic – it rolls past like a dream, especially the island sequences. Children who have read the book may be disappointed by any changes they stare in the chronicle. But the film is a a masterpiece of storytelling – for children or otherwise.

The 30th Anniversary Edition of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was originally botched as a fullscreen-only anxiety. However, Warner listened to the people and gave them a astounding widescreen transfer.

Colors are vibrant, the 5.1 Dolby Digital track is very nice, and there are a handful of frosty extras. There is the 30-minute documentary “Pure Imagination” which shows some of the cast today, including all the children and Gene Wilder himself. The interviews of the cast looking support at the movie which was the defining thing for so many of them is very captivating. The documentary on the whole is rather fulfilling. While one feels that the documentary could have delved deeper and maybe been an hour-long, at a brisk 30 minutes, the pacing seems okay and it won’t leave you wanting too mighty more. There is a small amount of archival on-set “B” roll footage, but all that is there is exciting.

Also included is the modern theatrical trailer (Warner left off the 25th Anniversary trailer that was on the unusual DVD release from 1997), a 4-minute featurette on the production build, and a feature-length audio commentary from the children, who have now grown up. The other features – “character bios” and sing-alongs – are fair noteworthy fluff features. Since this was one of my most anticipated DVD releases of the year, I can’t encourage but feel Warner could have done more in the method of extra features – games, outtakes, deleted scenes, etc. Nevertheless, the overall yelp of this DVD is satisfying enough.

As one of the greatest films of all time, and certainly one of the most exquisite musicals and most savory films of the 1970s, “Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory” has a timeless feel to it. This DVD deserves a position in every collection.

If you like the movie, then know better than to be the fullframe edition, which was released earlier. Widescreen in the modern ratio is the only blueprint to go. Especially in a few years from now, when we all have 16 x 9 widescreen TVs, and that “fullframe” version leaves you with stout bars on the side of the TV. Gawk the movie the map it was made and meant to be seen – in widescreen. And when you do find that 16 x 9 television, guess what – the widescreen DVD will occupy your camouflage!

WOW, I can’t enjoy how long ago this film was made and how incredible it is even today! It really doesn’t seem like it’s from 1971. I have probably seen this film over 500 times by now, since the 80’s and I level-headed am not the least bit bored of it. At 28 years used, I unruffled totally care for this film!!! The characters, especially Gene Wilder who plays Willy Wonka, who is THE Willy Wonka, who could never be topped EVER (yes I’ve seen the 2005 film!), the music, the setting, the songs, and especially the Oompa-Loompa’s! Everything in this film is so wonderfully done and everyone who hasn’t seen it yet, needs to as soon as possible!!

My well-liked position or scene in the whole film has to be the broad candy and chocolate room where Willy Wonka sings “Pure Imagination.” Not only for the song but because I can study how noteworthy work the director do into this film. All the candy and chocolate looks so right and alive and the whole room looks so handsome the blueprint everything is situation up! I also treasure that teacher, Charlie’s teacher that you sight a lot until they go into the chocolate factory, he is so laughable! And it’s location in London, an added bonus!! I unprejudiced cannot earn enough of this film or recommend this film enough!! It’s a masterpiece!!! It’s definitely one of my accepted movies of all time!!!

Who could not adore Veruca’s “I Want It Now” performance? That whole scene was totally shining!

The Special Widescreen Edition DVD has tons of extras. There is commentary by the kids who got to go inside the factory. You’ll also learn that Gene Wilder wouldn’t play Willy Wonka unless he was able to do that somersault that he does before letting the kids through the gate. There is an interview with Gene Wilder from 2001, The Making of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, four suppose along songs, a 1971 unhurried the scenes featurette, and a photo gallery.

The Robe is most noted now for being the first movie filmed in CinemaScope. It was not the first film shot in a widescreen process. There were a few experiments with widescreen in the twenties and thirties, but The Robe was the film which started the inform in the production of widescreen epics. The Robe therefore has a clear and principal dwelling in cinema history, but this would mean minute today if it were not also a aesthetic film in its absorb upright. In this respect it does not disappoint. The tale tells of Marcellus Gallio (Richard Burton), a Roman tribune sent to Palestine who oversees the crucifixion of Christ. He wins Christ’s robe in a dice game, puny realising the significance it will have for him. Burton is very superior in this role and shows what a lovely film actor he could be. Victor Old is also involving as Demetrius, Burton’s slave and later his friend. Best of all the film shows Jean Simmons at her best, playing Diana the woman Burton loves. My only complaint about her role is that she does not appear on shroud enough.

Biblical epics may not be terribly fashionable nowadays, but I’ve always enjoyed them and The Robe is one of the best of the genre. It describes the events surrounding the familiar Biblical stories using characters from the Bible and fictional characters to flesh out the anecdote. In this map it rather resembles how Ben Hur interweaves the Biblical record with fictional events of Ben Hur’s life. This technique works well in The Robe and makes for handsome historical fiction with a religious theme.

The print ragged for the Twentieth Century Fox DVD is in genuine condition. The CinemaScope images have been anamorphically enhanced and glimpse pretty. The colours are intellectual and definite and there is hardly any visible afflict. The sound likewise is expedient with no background noise. This DVD only has some trailers for extras, but anyone who enjoys Biblical epics will want to glean The Robe.

A obliging legend melodrama, with portions that are emotionally stirring, and with two exceedingly stunning stars, this film ranks high in the “sword and sandals” genre.

This is prime-time Richard Burton, at age 27, glorious to view at and even better to listen to; his crisp enunciation makes the English language shine, and though some of his scenes are a minute “over the top”, he carries them off with charismatic presence. Jean Simmons is ravishing as Diana, the woman who has loved Marcellus (Burton) since childhood, and their camouflage romance has a rare depth and spark.

Other distinguished performances advance from Victor Obsolete as Demetrius the slave, with a restful but gripping scene at Christ’s crucifixion, and Michael Rennie is tall as Peter. Jay Robinson is wonderfully nasty as the vicious Caligula.

I always like a kindly fight sequence, and there is a brilliantly choreographed one between Marcellus and a centurion. It is the kind of swordplay tall Shakespearean actors have perfected, and it is a delight to notice.

Directed by Henry Koster, it has an exceptional derive by Alfred Newman, and vibrant Technicolor cinematography by Leon Shamroy. I like the intention the night scenes have a deep blue glow to them, and the costumes are astonishing. Oscars went to Best Art Direction/Set Earn (color) and Best Costume accomplish (color) . It was also nominated for Best Report, Best Actor, and Best Cinematography (color), and was the first film to be released in CinemaScope.

I saw this film many years ago, and had idea it a runt comic, but we have both extinct well; I can now look it repeatedly, and luxuriate in the depictions of courage, and the beauty and humanity of it. Total running time is 2 hours and 13 minutes.

I loved this movie. It was totally bonkers: a human baby accidently ends up on the north pole and grows up among the elf community that supports Santa Claus. Buddy, as he comes to be known, knows that he’s “special” however, since he can’t withhold up with the other elves. Never mind the fact that he’s about three times as expansive as any of them and barely fits in the shower.

When he’s 30, and peaceful young by Elf standards, he learns that he’s really a human. Buddy decides to go in search of his father (who’s on Santa’s impish list), to gain out where he belongs. He walks to Unique York (through the Lincoln tunnel), and is immediately urge over by a cab. The chain of events starts at that moment …

Buddy is a exquisite and absorbing character with many special talents and a childish personality. He is naive to the point of stupidity, but charming all the while. His lovable demeanour gains him friends in spite of his clumsy efforts. He is sweet, kind and helpful. When his father at first rejects him, Buddy ends up in a department store where other elves (people who pretend to be Santa’s elves) are working, and stays up all night to decorate the location. When the department store Santa isn’t the precise Santa, well, you can guess what happens …

Buddy eats spaghetti covered in syrup, smarties and pop tarts; he gets drunk in the mail room of his father’s office and his young half-brother shows him to ask a girl out on a date.

But all the while, things are looking awful for Santa Claus (and also Buddy’s father) . How will Buddy rescue the day? When Santa crashes his sleigh in Central Park, it’s Buddy’s moment to shine.

Abstract, racy, child-like madness all execute up this pretty movie. Absolutely palatable and recommended to viewers of all ages. If you want a Christmas feel-good movie, this is it.

First of all, this was the funniest film I have ever seen; I was in tears half contrivance through. Yes, it is a kids’ movie, but adults regain to glance Will Farrel rip the heart out of Christmas by camping it up and being ridiculously valid. Watching Farrel initiate a fight with a deceptive Santa for “sitting on a throne of lies” is about as fun as films derive.

Those reviewers who reflect that this was cheesey nonsense – duh. It was supposed to be, and that is what made it so droll. And you seem to have missed the whole essence of the film.

I fair saw this film today (after missing out on a sold out sneak preview last weekend) and the increased level of expectation was met with one of the most rewarding moviegoing experiences I’ve had in the last five years. Monster House gives us one doozy of a spooky antagonist, a decrepit domicile of living malice that gobbles errant toys and passerby with equal ingenuity and viciousness.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Monster House! Click Here

The house is wearisome venerable MEAN, and for really runt children perhaps a shrimp too scary to consume in a tremendous room filled with strangers and darkness. But for those of us who are too grown up for a nighlight this is perfect, creepy entertainment.

The same motion acquire technology old to form The Polar Mumble (a film which I have quiet yet to eye) is a very sharp and appropriate choice for this film, where the only truly extraordinary element is the demented house that will not suffer trespassers. It works so well because the eerie realism that depicts the characters is so starkly contrasted with the insanity that ultimately drives the Monster House to be, well, so frightening.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Monster House! Click Here

Now I fully expected to be entertained by the antics of the house, but I didn’t demand there to be noteworthy of a memoir. Again I was pleasantly surprised by what I reflect is a script that I own is unprejudiced as honorable of an Oscar nomination as the script for The Incredibles was. There is, beneath the floorboards of this film, more heart than fear. A record of admire, retribution, acceptance, forgiveness, and ultimately letting go.

Monster House is, beyond a doubt, one of the coolest Alarm movies for kids ever made. A Halloween tradition in the making that dares to reply that age frail question: Can a house be disturbed?

The acknowledge is a resounding yes with a disquieting post script.

Whatever is tremulous may also be hungry!

Monster House uses the same motion-capture technology as Zemeckis’ Polar Instruct but takes it to the next level. This time around, the whole context of the movie will appeal to a wider audience so this is a substantial opportunity to show the possibilities that this all digital technology offers.

Beyond the technical achievement, Monsterhouse is an generous surprise for its family-oriented audience. Unlike Dreamworks and their Shrek-ish, below-the-belt, cynically adult-oriented features, this movie aims at both the kids and grown-ups in a contrivance that tends to unite them around its subject, rather than addressing the two categories separately and alternatively.

To kids, this will be their first experience of an sincere fright flick: the house IS seriously skittish and this is definitly no Casper-like curse. Lives are at stake here and the line between suited and imperfect is not so strictly defined.

Some aspects of the location have a very macabre touch, detached a bittersweet feeling comes in balance towards the waste.

A proper implication is required from the kids, especially because a few thrills awaits them once the house has awaken.

On the parents’ side, besides the fact that for those like me who grew up with the Amblin productions of the eighties (The Goonies, The Gremlins and co), you are in for a tremendous back-to-the-future nostalgic rush. Not only because the action takes space in the 80’s (various hints lead to own it) but because the whole atmosphere, the characters, the humour will either build you wish you could tranquil be 5 to 10 years veteran to fully dive into this nightmarish yarn, or simply will obtain you forget you’ve grown older and manufacture you actually feel like you’re a kid again.

So thank you Mr Zemeckis and Mr Spielberg for producing this puny gem, which, though it draws its inspiration from a classic tradition of skittish mansion archetypes, never fails to derive its believe identity and energy.

In a nutshell: gigantic style and screenplay, technically impressive and very concerned about offering a satisfying display to the audience.

Lyrical Nanoha starts out looking like a typical Magical Girl exhibit – the main character meets a talking animal that gives her a magic item, which she uses to fight off a monster attack, and she is given the task of collecting remarkable artifacts (Jewel Seeds) .

The first dissimilarity one notices is that, atypical for the apparent genre, Nanoha throws herself at the task with enthusiasm, hard work, and responsible decisions. After Fate shows up in episode 4, the monster-of-the-week takes a help seat to character development and the conflict between the two girls. When another group shows up at the kill of episode 7… well, I won’t spoil anything further.

Lyrical Nanoha, despite being a exhibit where the main character is a third grade girl with magical powers, is more targeted to the seinen (young men) demographic than the shoujo (young girls) one. That’s not because of fanservice (there’s a typical transformation sequence, but that’s really it), but because of the more complex state, the attention to detail given to the battles and the character development.

The product description for this anime doesn’t really do it justice. From the description, one might consider this a typical “get all of the artifacts” mission typical of its genre. But the Jewel Seeds are not really the point of the location.

As the titular character, Nanoha Takamachi, puts it herself at the originate of the first episode, “Sometimes, a person’s emotions can touch and clash with someone else’s. And there’s people whose feelings can bond with another so perfectly, they can talk without saying a word. Well, this is a chronicle about people like that and what happens when they eventually meet.”

For Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, the battles and the Jewel Seeds retract a aid seat to the characters and how they are affected by the events that grasp location. In its 13-episode hurry, the series manages to do what many shows fail to conclude with far more airtime: it tells a sage of people, a myth rich in character development, character interaction, and ultimately meaning. And amidst all of that, it unexcited retains its situation as a magical girl indicate, with flashy attack spells, a transformation sequence, and a third-grade girl with magical power.

Easily one of the most enchanting and scrumptious anime series I’ve seen in a while, and if you like the magical girl style, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha shouldn’t be missed.

For those of us generally fatigued by the apparent cultural and commercial compulsion to identify genre; to separate the ideas of “art” and “science” and “life” into discrete, highly defined clots, there is the work of Jean Painleve. In addition to pioneering entirely current techniques in revealing many things previously unseen, Painleve’s images are startling in their screech and composition, transcending the purely documentary by the application of an stunning sense as refined as the nature it observes. Comic, roguish and informative on multiple levels, these films are so immersive as to be literally saturated. With color. With image. With detail. With ideas. With associations. With knowledge. Criterion has done us all a service by placing this work within easy approach, ready to continually remind us of how compelling impartial being can be.
